During Week 1 of Advent, we focus on Promise + Prophecy. What must it have been like for the generations living before Jesus’ birth? Listening, watching, waiting, holding to the promise, seeking to discern the will of God, longing for the coming Messiah.
The faith of God’s people through the centuries reminds us of the hope and promise we cling to and the joy of knowing Immanuel—the God who has come, lived, died and risen again.
Some of our Egyptian friends pointed us to a beloved Advent hymn, “The Virgin Conceived a Child.” It is a beautiful musical interpretation of Isaiah 9 in Arabic. As you enter this week, take a moment to reflect on these lyrics and listen to the song online.
،ها العذراء تحبل وتلد ابنًا
وتدعو اسمه عمانوئل
BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL CONCEIVE AND BEAR A SON,
AND SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL.
GOD IS WITH US.
FOR TO US A CHILD IS BORN AND A SON IS GIVEN,
AND THE GOVERNMENT SHALL BE UPON HIS SHOULDER.
AND HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED
WONDERFUL COUNSELOR, ALMIGHTY GOD,
ETERNAL FATHER, PRINCE OF PEACE.
O MY JESUS.
O WONDROUS ONE,
YOU ARE THE DESIRE OF NATIONS,
IN YOU IS THE “YES AND AMEN.”
O WONDROUS ONE, O COUNSELOR, O GOD,
O ALMIGHTY, O ETERNAL FATHER, O PRINCE OF PEACE.*
